The walled city, entered through gates such as Surajpole, Chandpole and Hathipole, is a maze of narrow, sloping lanes. Around Jagdish Chowk and the City Palace, cars and heavy vehicles are restricted on some stretches under the city's pedestrian plan. Homes on a slope

Around the lakes and on the hillsides, the road and the front door are often at different levels. The truck waits on the road and everything goes up or down by hand. Hiran Magri and the sector colonies

Hiran Magri is the largest residential area in the city, laid out in numbered sectors. Most homes are independent houses or floors, with a good many student rooms and PGs in Sectors 3 and 4. Access is straightforward, and these moves are quick.

New apartments in Shobhagpura and Bhuwana

The newer developments on the northern side have lifts and society offices. They want notice before a move and usually have preferred hours for goods.

Marble in the house

A marble table top looks solid and behaves like glass. It is lifted on its edge, never flat, wrapped in foam and board, and stood upright in the truck against a padded wall. October to March

This is when most of the city's visitors arrive, well over a million in a year, and when the big weddings are held. The old city and the lake roads are crowded from mid-morning to late evening, and small vehicles and labour are in demand. Book early, choose a weekday and start at first light.

Monsoon

The rains begin in July. Stone steps and sloping lanes turn slippery, and carrying a wardrobe down them is slower and riskier. On wet days we add hands, wrap everything in film and wait out a heavy shower instead of pushing through it.

Summer

From April to June the afternoons reach the low forties. Work begins at dawn and the truck is closed before midday. Keep medicines, cosmetics and anything that melts with you.

Roads through the hills

The highway south to Ahmedabad is fast, and a morning dispatch usually reaches the same evening or the next morning. Roads towards Jodhpur and across the Aravallis are slower than the distance suggests. We give delivery windows that allow for the terrain.

Taking an RJ-27 vehicle to another state

Many Udaipur families move to Gujarat or Maharashtra. If the car or bike is going permanently, a No Objection Certificate from the transport office here is generally needed to re-register it there. BH-series vehicles are exempt. Do this before the vehicle is loaded and check the Parivahan portal for the current steps. It is the owner's task.
